  • The Soviet Makarov (PM), designed in 1950 to replace the older soviet sidearm designs of the TT-30/33 and the venerable Nagant M1895 revolver which had been used during WWII. It was loosely based on Walther’s PP, but with a simplified blowback action and a minimum of moving parts. Interestingly it was chambered in 9x18mm Makarov, a 9mm cartridge larger than the 9x19mm Parabellum used by NATO, this was so captured Soviet ammunition could not be used by the West. The Makarov is slowly being phased out by the Russian army but is still used by the majority of the Eastern Communist bloc states and of course North Korea.
